It is set to be one of the more tranquil England-Australia series. That's certainly how it should play out if you go by the build-up. Before the Ashes it was all about ending careers. Now it's about mending bridges.
We'll only know when the battle commences: if the Aussie mongrels had a snip or if England take their cues from the crowds. Certainly those watching at the Oval on Wednesday (June 13) will be on top of those in yellow with similarly toned and comically-sized bits of "sandpaper". But there is enough at stake for both sides beyond vendettas.
"Flower of Scotland" still ringing in their ears, England's defeat up in Edinburgh has given them something to think about a year out from next year's World Cup. While batsmen didn't cover themselves in glory, flunking on a number of occasions, it was the fact that England were chasing 372 in the first place that has drawn the most attention. Eoin Morgan argued that away with talks of a small ground and a good wicket. He would be less agreeable, he said, if that score was racked up against them at the Oval.
As it stands, it looks like the attack will be as is. There was a thought, perhaps, that Tom Curran could come back in for his variations and ability at the death, with David Willey losing his place. The Yorkshire allrounder faces a big month as the fine-tuning begins. As settled as the squad seems to be, Morgan and the management admit they are receptive to bolters, and Willey, along with Sam Billings, look the two most vulnerable in the squad.
Australia, meanwhile, go into the first of this five-match series without five mainstays through a combination of punishment and injury. Or, put another way, a chance to look at five new players ahead of their title defence in 2019. Preparations against Sussex and Middlesex, while competitive (they were both official List A games), have not provided solutions to a batting card that needs sorting and a bowling attack that requires balancing. Nevertheless, Tim Paine's quest to improve this Australian team's standing on a national and international level starts tomorrow.
Nevermind where the line has been set right now. As professional sport has shown throughout its history, win games and you can put the one where you want.
WHEN: 1pm BST (5:30pm IST), June 13, 2018
WHERE: The Oval, London
WHAT TO EXPECT: We've been promised temperatures up to 24-degrees-Celsius, but there is also the prospect of rain threatening to interrupt play at some point in the afternoon.
TEAM NEWS
England: Jos Buttler returns to the squad, having been rested for the Scotland game. Sam Billings will make way.
Australia: Something of a free-for-all. After a few middle order collapses, Aaron Finch has stepped in - or down - and been a mighty effective stop-gap. He found joy there during the shoe-horned Trans-Tasman T20 Tri-series between England and New Zealand in February and, after scores of 78 and 54 in the warm-ups, is seeing the ball well. Using Finch there will mean sticking with D'Arcy Short as an opener, who has struggled. The pitch will be flat - Oval, an ODI, you do the maths - so the extra pace of Billy Stanlake and the extra bow of Ashton Agar should see them pip their squad rivals. Everything crossed that they stick with Glenn. No Maxwell, no party.
DID YOU KNOW
- Australia have a 5-3 win-loss record against England at the Oval, the venue for the first ODI. Since 2000, they have won four out of their five games against England here.
- Jonny Bairstow's last three ODI innings read 138, 104 and 105. If he scores a hundred in the first ODI, he will become only the second player after Kumar Sangakkara to score centuries in four successive innings.
- Eoin Morgan needs 110 more runs to go past Ian Bell (5416 runs) as England's leading run-getter in ODI cricket.TeamsEngland (From): Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Sam Billings(w), Moeen Ali, David Willey, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Jake BallAustralia (From): Aaron Finch, D Arcy Short, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Tim Paine(w/c), Ashton Agar, Kane Richardson, Andrew Tye, Billy Stanlake, Alex Carey, Michael Neser, Nathan Lyon, Jhye Richardson
